The pop filter is a very important device that helps improve the sound quality of your podcast. It helps prevent your microphone from "popping." This is caused when you say words with the letter "P" in them. When you say a word like podcast, your mouth makes a small wind while forming the "P" sound. The popfilter takes away some of the intensity from the word, and smoothes out the sound wave. Because of this you can now record your podcast a little bit louder.
